Included from Fairport's second album is an alternate version of 'Mr Lacey' taken from the Sandy Denny box set, Richard Thompson's first really great song and Fairport Convention's unofficial anthem 'Meet On The Ledge' (plus the B-Side from it's single release, 'Throwaway Street Puzzle') plus a couple of. By January 1971 Richard Thompson had left Fairport Convention following Sandy Denny and Ashley Hutchings on to other projects leaving the band to be steered by Dave Swarbrick deeper into traditional English Folk and the next 3 Discs of the box set becoming generally a series of diminished returns unless you enjoyed the albums recorded after Full House.
Sandy Denny laid down the marker for folk-rock when she joined Fairport Convention in 1968, releasing three albums with them in 1969 before her shock departure just ahead of the release of the celebrated Liege & Lief. Her music went far beyond this during the seventies, driven by a restless search for the perfect framework for her songs, first with Fotheringay the group she formed but controversially left after recording just one album. On leaving, she immediately collaborated on a historic one-off recording with Led Zeppelin on ‘The Battle of Evermore’ – the only guest vocalist ever to record with the group. Four fascinating, mercurial solo albums followed as well as an ultimately misguided return to Fairport Convention before her tragic and untimely death, aged 31, in 1978, in circumstances still shrouded in hearsay and speculation. Sandy emerged from the folk scene of the sixties – a world of larger-than-life characters such as Alex Campbell, Jackson C.
Frank, Anne Briggs and Australian singer Trevor Lucas, whom she married in 1973. Their often turbulent relationship is at the core of Sandy’s later life and work, as she tried to reconcile a longing for the simple life and motherhood with the trappings of a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle and a fear of the fame and success which others expected of her. This is her story told with the help of more than sixty of her friends, fellow musicians and contemporaries all of whom spoke with great candour, some with too much candour, and all with a mixture of joy and sadness when talking about Sandy.' Filmed at the Barbican in London, this tribute concert to the singer-songwriter Sandy Denny spans her career with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay and as a solo artist. Her most famous song Who Knows Where The Time Goes has been covered by everyone from Judy Collins to Nina Simone. But when she died in 1978 aged 31, Sandy left behind a rich songbook and here an eclectic cast from the folk world and beyond set out to explore and reinterpret it. English folk queen and Sandy contemporary Maddy Prior, performs the menacing John the Gun the courtly Fotheringay and Solo.
Veteran Sandy cohorts are represented by Fotheringay and Fairport guitarist, Jerry Donahue and fiddler extraordinaire, Dave Swarbrick. Fine young troubadours Sam Carter and Blair Dunlop - son of Fairport’s Ashley Hutchings - show the folk tradition is in safe hands with strong performances of It Suits Me Well and The Sea. With a house band featuring members of Bellowhead and Ben Nicholls, the line-up also includes former Scritti Politti singer Green Gartside, Joan Wasser aka ‘Joan as Policewoman’ (with a heartbreaking No More Sad Refrains), Trembling Bells singer Lavinia Blackwall (doing a spine tingling Quiet Joys of Brotherhood) and American soul singer PP Arnold (with a roof-raising Take Me Away), plus Thea Gilmore who was asked by Sandy’s estate to put some of her unset lyrics to music resulting in her hit single 'London'.
The performances on stage are interspersed with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage that shed light on how the concert came together, plus rare archive of Sandy herself. This show is evidence that - even without the magic of her singing voice - the songs still shine.
